In 1989, Eric Maldonado created welcome signs for the Illinois Valley in Southern Oregon — each one featuring a caricature of the state animal. Not a logo. Not clip art. A character. A story painted on a board by the side of the road, meant to stop a stranger and make them feel something about the place they'd just entered. He gave his little friend a name: Banjo the Beaver.

The idea was always the same: every state has a symbol. Every symbol has a story. And those stories belong to the people who live on the land.

Today, Banjo's legacy lives on through Tempo the Turtle — the narrator of The Great Theme, the voice of father time across all 50 states, guiding the story from Delaware to Hawaii, one card at a time.
